How to sideload apps on AT&T Dell Streak running official Android 2.2 (Froyo) update
AT&T is notorious for preventing its customers from installing non-Market apps (better known as sideloading) on their Android devices. The carrier did it to the original Android 1.6-running Dell Streak, so it's no surprise that the limitation appeared in the official Android 2.2 (Froyo) update too.
There was a very simple workaround to enable sideloading on 1.6 (tutorial here), but it doesn't work on AT&T's crippled version of 2.2. So does this mean that anyone who chooses to use this official build (rather than one of DJ_Steve's custom ROMs) can't install all of the great apps that aren't in the Market? Of course not!
1. If you're not already using it (and many of you are), download and install ADW.Launcher:
2. Long press an open area on your Streak's home screen to bring up the "Add to Home screen" menu.
3. Tap Custom shortcut > Pick your activity > Activities > EMList > EMListInstaller > OK.
4. Tap the new icon on your home screen then go to your app drawer and locate the newly created EMList icon/app. If it's not there, reboot your Streak and check for it again.
5. Open EMList, scroll to the bottom of the list, and tap app_security.
6. Tap update unknown resource property to enable it.
To confirm that it worked, press the Home button on your Streak followed by Menu -> Settings -> Applications. You should now see the "Unknown sources" option. Tap it so you can install all the apps you don't find in the Market at any time.
